Asheville's doughnut glut? Hole opens, Vortex sets date

Tuesday, October 21, 2014

From the Asheville Scene: Vortex Doughnuts, founded by Ron and Valerie Patton, has jumped a series of hurdles on its path to opening, including winning last year's Big Tasty contest by Blue Ridge Food Ventures and a prize at the 2013 BaconFest for a doughnut made with "baconized sugar," aleppo pepper and apricots.

Look for more over-the-top combinations at the store, which uses a slew of local ingredients in its pastries. One of the first doughnuts in the new space was called "Moonswine" and topped whiskey moonshine chocolate, bacon and applewood smoked sea salt.

Vortex Doughnuts opens Oct. 27 at 32 Banks Ave. in Asheville.
