Ingredients to make a food business dream come true

BelloLea Artisan Kitchen owners Sue Devitt and Tom Gallo make their pizza kits at Blue Ridge Food Ventures

What do you get when you mix a PhD ceramics engineer with a marketing and package design expert, combine that with a passion for creating healthy food and cook it all up at Blue Ridge Food Ventures? BelloLea Artisan Kitchen pizza kits – the only artisan-crafted pizza kits on the market.

Started in 2010 by husband and wife team Tom Gallo and Susan Devitt,  are a healthy and easy way to enjoy delicious homemade pizza in 30 minutes.

The pizza kits include Tom’s grandmother’s famous sauce, crust mix to make a 12-inch pizza and a high temperature cooking paper to build and cook the pizza on.

Perfecting & Packaging Pizza Kits with help from Blue Ridge Food Ventures

Tom and Susan perfected and package their pizza kits (formerly known as GalloLea Pizza Kits) at Blue Ridge Food Ventures. They produced 25,000 units in 2013 and expect to jump to 40,000 in 2014.

“We started selling our pizza kits at local and regional farmers’ markets,” says Susan. “Earth Fare was the first retail location to put our product on their shelves."

Now you can find BelloLea pizza kits in all the Earth Fares as well as some of the regional Whole Foods, Fresh Markets and Ingles stores. They're also in the 11 Moms Organic Markets in the Washington DC area, and sales are increasing through the online grocery business such as Amazon, Abes Market, Healthy Heart Market and Vegan Cuts.

Even Europeans are enjoying Pizza Kits made in Western NC

BelloLea pizza kits are now in the Atlanta location of UNFI, the largest natural products distributor in the nation, which will open up distribution channels in the southeast region. In addition, the kits are now being exported to Europe and the company will soon be sending several pallets to China.

Another target they're working on expanding: the fundraising market. "BelloLea offers a healthy and fun alternative to the typical cookie dough and gift wrap world of fundraising," says Susan.
